WNAC offering a costume making workshop

With the support the Nebraska Arts Council and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, West Nebraska Arts Center is pleased to present Be the Character: An Introduction to Cosplay. This 8-week workshop is open to ages 13 and up.

Have you ever watched a movie, read a comic or manga or played a video game and thought, “I wish I could walk a mile in that person’s shoes?” Well, here is your chance to truly become another person through the art of cosplay.

Cosplay is a contraction of the words ‘costume play’ and it is the practice of dressing up as a character from a movie, book or video game, especially one from the Japanese genres of manga, anime and superheroes.

This course is open to all experience levels, and will walk you through a basic understanding of what it means to cosplay, what materials and resources are available and how to make those resources work effectively to create the character you want. It will cover creating patterns, cutting, shaping, joining foam and how to successfully paint this material.

Students will have free control to create any character they wish in the 8-week time frame, with the final results being presented at this year’s High Plains Mini Con on Saturday, Oct. 20.

Under the instruction of Blaine Sexton, this workshop will be held in the downstairs Bronson Gallery at WNAC at various times throughout the 8-week span.
